One of today’s most pressing challenges is the global shortage of seafarers. Despite their high earning potential (captains command salaries up to $200,000 annually), the world’s 2 million seafarers remain difficult to recruit (and expensive to train). Their scarcity is a direct threat to $24 trillion in global trade—the backbone of the global economy and foundation for the unprecedented improvements in living standards we've witnessed over the last 80 years.

 Uncomfortable Truths About Seafaring

Consider these facts: Global trade is projected to triple by 2050, yet there’s already a 9% shortfall in officers. Almost half (47%) of shore-based seafarers will retire in the next decade. And only 20% of seafarers are native English speakers, while poor communication accounts for 40% of maritime accidents. Even more telling? When asked if they would recommend a seafaring career to their children, the overwhelming majority of seafarers say “no.”

These unsettling realities reflect deep-seated issues faced by seafarers throughout their careers. But where there are problems, there are opportunities—ripe for startups and venture capitalists to address through innovative technology.

 The GenAI Sea Change

Generative AI (genAI) has dominated headlines, bringing a wave of chatbots, assistants, copilots, agents and personas to market. And while its impact on white-collar roles is already widely discussed (a16z predicts every such role will have an AI copilot and some even fully automated by AI agents), does this apply to seafarers?

Many seafarers transition into shore-based roles after serving as officers and that 9% officer shortfall translates into many unfilled positions, such as superintendents. 80% of tasks performed by these highly skilled former seafarers are repetitive or manual, often revolving around safety and compliance. By connecting systems of record—SMS, VMS, QHSE—and leveraging industry data sources like AIS and Port/Flag States, shipping companies can build knowledge graphs that instantly answer complex questions like, “Ship X had an accident in Port Y; what should I do?”

 From death by email to autonomous shipping

Marine managers, for example, spend 70% of their day dealing with emails—often receiving over 1,000 a day, all of which must be read to prevent avoidable accidents. While many seafarers are familiar with the concept of a “Digital Twin” for ships, they will soon generate their own personal digital twin, or genAI persona. These role-specific and eventually individual-specific, personas will be supercharged by the largest data silos in shipping: the email inbox. Imagine a persona that can summarize, prioritize and draft emails, reducing the daily email burden. Over time, genAI will handle even more complex tasks, such as arranging dry dockings.

 Since a Marine Manager is a Captain and a Technical Manager is a Chief Engineer, the next logical step for genAI is the bridge, paving the way for autonomous deep-sea shipping. While this will certainly change the nature of seafaring, a robust pipeline of future seafarers will still be crucial.

Improving the Seafarer Career Path

The current process of finding the right education or job is opaque, tedious and discourages many from entering or continuing in the profession. Seafarers, often contract workers, typically apply for new jobs more than twice a year. In the Philippines and India—the world’s largest seafaring nations—jobs are often posted as.jpegs on social media, with scant details beyond rank and salary. Seafarers must manually input CV data into multiple platforms or email pdfs to individual manning agents, often without receiving feedback unless shortlisted.
